Blockbuster of a Movie Night! More than 600 people gathered for Movie Night in the Park -- an enormous success. Friday's screening of IGOR was sponsored by Gus Machado Ford. Free ice cream was a big hit too -- thanks, Farm Stores. And thanks to all the residents who came out to support this great event.

Police Planning Pumpkin Patrol ... Be on the look out for Palmetto Bay Police cruising the streets on Halloween to promote safety and distribute candy and glow-sticks. The Mayor and Council will join Police on this important annual mission -- don't scare them too much, kids! (Oct. 30, 2009)

Library Soft Opening ... A new chapter in Village history began Oct. 19, when Miami-Dade County opened the doors of our new Palmetto Bay Branch Library at Ludovici Park. About 50 resident book lovers were there within the first hour, to be part of Village history! (Oct. 19, 2009)
Flinn Gets Prestigious Award ... Our Mayor is the 2009 recipient of the Steven J. Cranman Professional Public Service Award. The award is provided annually by Chamber South. (Oct. 2009)

Ban on Texting ... The Council is encouraging a proposed State ban on texting while driving to minimize the threat to motor vehicle operators, pedestrians, and cyclists -- particularly children. Get the full story in the October e-Currents.
Reducing Panther Footprints ... The Mayor and Council members attended an program at Perrine Elementary called “Reducing the Panther’s Footprint,” geared toward acknowledging student efforts at learning everyday ways to reduce their carbon footprint. See the Photo Gallery for more. (Oct. 13)

Public Works Uses Stimulus ... Public Works has issued a Procurement Notice for several projects funded by the Federal stimulus program, including construction of a new traffic circle at SW 168 St. & 87 Ave., and installation of crosswalks at SW 152 St. & Old Cutler. (Oct. 2009)

Construction Contract Approved ... The Village Council approved the contract with Master Builders of South Florida -- the same firm that recently joined Village officials in DC to pursue grant opportunities for this LEED-certified project, slated for completion in Fall 2010. (Sept. 2009)
Flu Guide Also Available ... Also, the Obama Administration has issued a guide for community leaders and faith-based organizations that communicates important health information in an effective and motivating manner.
FY2009-10 Budget Approved ... Village Council is pleased to announce it has approved the Operating & Capital Budget for the new fiscal year, starting Oct. 1. Until the final document is prepared, free to review the proposed budget online. Thanks for your input!

Fire Station Legislation ... The U.S. House of Representatives today announced passage of a bill sponsored by Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) to make possible the construction of a new fire station in Palmetto Bay. Special thanks to Village staff (Building Official Edward Silva and Olga Cadaval, Assistant to the Manager) who were in DC today to underscore the importance of -this much-needed -addition to our community infrastructure, as noted in the Congressman's remarks on the floor. Elementary Schools Honored ... At Monday night's Council meeting, two local schools were awarded cash prizes to proceed with recycling initiatives at their respective campuses, as part of a plan to utilize a state grant for community recycling programs and services. Verizon Grand Opening ... Mayor Flinn and Councilmembers Stanczyk, Feller, and Tendrich celebrated the grand opening of Verizon Wireless Evolution Store, one of only three such store in Miami-Dade. The event included music, face-painting, and free hot dogs at the store's new Colonial Palms plaza location. Thanks for choosing Palmetto Bay, Verizon! (Sept.12, 2009)

Happy Birthday, Palmetto Bay...
Our Village was founded seven years ago today, as voters overwhelmingly approved incorporation of this wonderful municipality on Sept. 10, 2002. Few would argue we accomplished exactly what we set out to do. Congratulations to all! (Sept. 10, 2009)
Peak Period for Hurricanes ... In the midst of peak season, NOAA lowers its hurricane outlook but cautions us to stay vigil. Are you prepared? Meanwhile, all that remains of "Fred" are distant thunderstorms and showers half-way across the Atlantic. (Sept. 12, 2009)
Mosquitoes Beware ... The County revised its mosquito-control plan to include Palmetto Bay last Thursday (9/3). However, the short notice issued by the County along with reports of low flying aircraft had some residents concerned. Thousand of mosquitoes were upset, too.(Sept. 2009)

DARE will Continue ... After receiving a notice to parents from Southwood that DARE funding will be cut by the County, Mayor Eugene Flinn confirms Village commitment to continue the program by funding it locally, "using DARE-trained Palmetto Bay Policing Unit officers." See his recent letter to parents and administrators. (Aug. 31, 2009)
School's in Session ... For local school kids, summer ended with the start of the new school year, Aug. 24. Village VIPs and Police were on hand to greet students -- and to show parents where to safely park!
Protect Our Migratory Birds ... Thanks to an effort sponsored by Councilwoman Shelley Stanczyk, the Village has established guidelines to help ensure survival of migratory birds in the Village. What are you doing to help? (August 2009)

Reserve Plane May Spray Palmetto Bay ... The Air Force Reserve could spray Palmetto Bay -- from an altitude of just 150 feet -- as early as 9/1, in coordination with County Public Works. See proposed areas. Questions? Call 311. (Aug. 28, 2009)

Fingerprinting for Kids … Police provided fingerprinting for kids at The Falls on Saturday, Aug. 22, in a program that would provide a valuable tool to aid authorities in their efforts to locate missing children. Our Commercial Corridor ... Palmetto Bay has launched a landscaping-beautification program along our US-1 commercial corridor. Staff has obtained required permits from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDoT) and is now lining up contractors to provide a mixture of palms and hedging to run along the highway.
